INSPIRATION BEHIND THE WORK: Created in 2017, for the Art Escape at Alcatraz, prisoner art exhibition, Alcatraz Isle, Band Practice Room on, May 1, 2017, through June 30, 2017. Curated by Leslie Lakes of Prison Art Touching Hearts (PATH).
Also inspired by the Native American take over of Alcatraz 1969 - 1971.
TECHNIQUE: dry medium (wax)
CULTURAL REFERENCE: Native American cultural claim to the island of Alcatraz
COMPARISONS:
ARTIST INTENT: to amplify the Native American reflection on their ownership of Alcatraz Isle.
In this wax colored drawing, a dreamlike blend of blue and white hues creates a moonlit ambiance over the Bay of San Francisco, with the iconic Alcatraz Island resting in the tranquil background. The scene is graced by the figure of a Native American woman, her profile beautifully detailed with long, black braided hair.
While her gaze is not upon the island, for C-Note, her presence evokes a deep connection to the historical 19-month occupation of Alcatraz by Native Americans from 1969 to 1971. This woman, depicted with a contemplative poise, becomes a symbol of reflection and resilience, embodying the spirit and legacy of a pivotal moment in history, captured in this enchanting and romantic portrayal.
